Hello
again. It's been a while since my last column, hope you enjoy
Part III, the final example in this series. Remember to try
all the examples in different scale fingerings and over different
chord progressions.
9)
Play 1 octave arpeggio shapes within scale patterns
- Learning the diatonic 7th chord shapes is a great help when
improvising over changes. It also allows greater flexibility
of movement within scale patterns. In this example I'm using
arpeggio shapes in G major.
10)
Try all examples over different chord changes.
Although I've given you chord suggestions
for examples 1-9, I strongly suggest you try each example over
a variety of chords. For Instance, example 9 should be played
over all the chords in G Major [ G major 7, Amin7, Bmin7, CMaj7,
D7, Emin7, F#min7B5 ] . By doing this you'll hear chord tones
and extensions.
Here's
a crash course in superimposing arpeggios:
Play G Major7 Chord == G B D F# [1 3 5 7 in G]
Play B Minor 7 Arp === B D F# A [ 3 5 7 9 in G]

Therefore, if you superimpose a B-7 arp over a G major7th chord,
you're playing a Rootless GMajor9 arp.
