Hello
and thanks for stopping by. Improvisation and Technique represent
two important, but often overlooked parts of any musicians repertoire.
Below are a few ideas that may give you a fresh outlook on improv
and help break you out of a rut. Below are the first 5 tips.
Look for the remaining 5 tips soon.
1)
Practice with a metronome
- You've probably heard this before, but it's one of the most
important concepts to becoming a better musician. Learning to
play in the pocket is absolutely essential. 'Nough Said.
2) Try different Rhythmic groups
- many musicians tend to practice the same sequences and rhythmic
groups over and over. By altering the sequential group you can
give a standard line a new twist.
3)
Try to extend standard Patterns
- One of the easiest ways to open your mind is to combine standard
patterns. In the following example I've combined 2 pentatonic
patterns. This allows greater intervallic leaps.
4) Try unorthodox Fingerings -
Different bottoms, or Horizontal movements can open new musical
ideas.
5)
Try skipping strings
- a Logical way to break up patterns. The first example moves
you through a G Mixolydian Pattern. The 2nd is a pentatonic
variation.
