BARE KNUCKLE BLACKGUARD TELE SERIES SINGLE COIL SINGLE PICKUP
Based on player requests for Telecaster® tones from specific eras and backed up by meticulous research, the Blackguard Tele® Series is a collection of four classic Tele® sets ranging from the original 'blackguard' Teles® of 1950 through to later 1968 models.
Scatter-wound by hand with 43AWG plain enamel wire on both bridge and neck, this is pure Broadcaster heaven. The hottest of the four sets with a thicker zinc plated steel baseplate, flat profile magnets and authentic vintage 'flat top' deep-drawn brass cover; the Flat 50s have a simply massive sound. Chunky bottom-end and snarling mids create a throaty tone with excellent natural sustain that can really push a tube amp hard.
For a very short period in '52 both bridge and neck coils were wound with 42AWG plain enamel and the Flat 52 set replicates this with a brighter, tighter sounding bridge coil and an open, almost Strat-like neck tone. Utilising the slightly thinner copper plated steel baseplate introduced in late '51 and staying with a flat profile magnet design and deep drawn neck cover, the tone has a defined snap in the bass and authentic, full twang. The Flat '52 really is a very unique and versatile Tele® set capable of a vast range of clean and driven vintage tones.
Introducing the slightly lighter wound staggered bridge coil with raised D and G poles for improved string to string balance, the '55 Stagger has a very precise and clear tone with greater emphasis in the upper mids. The neck coil moves back to 43AWG plain enamel for a warm, mellow tone that complements the crisp attack of the bridge coil while the in-between setting has that authentic and unmistakable Tele® 'quack'.
Grey bottomed flatwork, smaller diameter magnets and a much lighter wind characterise this early CBS era Tele® set. The brightest and most focused of the four sets in the series, the '68 Stagger coils have serious bite in the high end with an extremely percussive tone and lively dynamic. The matched wind of 42AWG bridge and 43AWG plain enamel neck is absolutely perfect for rosewood board Teles® producing a tight and ferocious tone.
The Flat '50 and Flat '52 set are well suited to maple boards or any application that requires extra output and a fatter tone. The '55 and '68 Stagger sets are best suited rosewood board Teles or any Tele that would benefit extra cut in the highs.
